Beware of False Movers

Moving can be a very difficult and stressful ordeal to have to go through. In many cases, it is necessary to hire a professional moving company to help lighten the load a bit. However, it appears that many moving companies do not have the proper licenses and credentials to perform the work. Earlier this month, 26 moving companies in NJ were fined at least $2500 for operating without a license.

Moving licenses are necessary to protect the consumer and their possessions. Proper paperwork ensures that everything is insured in case of damages. The Division of Consumer Affairs has received 89 complaints throughout 2013. This prompted New Jersey’s acting Attorney General John Hoffman to put Operation Mother’s Attic into effect.

This sting operation took place from Nov 19 through 22 of 2013. Authorities contracted unlicensed moving companies to deliver shipments to an empty storage facility in Ledgewood. This is where they were greeted by investigators from Consumer Affairs. There 26 companies were fined and two were arrested by customs and immigration for outstanding warrants.

Unfortunately, many shady moving companies will prey upon vulnerable consumers. In order to spot a bad company, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends this advice to see if you are being scammed:

• Check with the Better Business Bureau. If the company has a bad reputation there will be formal complaints lodged against them.
• Ask to see credentials. A legitimate company will easily be able to provide a license and any other required information.
• Be wary of any company without an official name. If a company answers the phone by saying “movers” or “moving company,” that should raise red flags. Also make sure the company has a formal address.
• If the movers arrive in unmarked vans as opposed to a fleet truck with a company logo, it is a bad sign.
